After saying goodbye to Alet les Bains, the next stage of our epic Summer road trip began. Over the course of the day we made our way towards the Pyrenees and our final destination was the small principality of Andorra.
But before making our way into the hills we stopped off at the simple chateau of Puivert…once home to the court of Eleanor of Aquitaine. A place of courtly love, troubadours and culture. Today there is little left and virtually no interpretation which made it difficult to understand what we were seeing. The property is often used for film locations and actors such as Johnny Depp have spent time here while filming The Ninth Gate. Old bits of props such as cart wheels and massive bellows still litter the place.
To say the drive up into the Pyrenees was breathtaking is an understatement. Around just about every corner was a new spectacular view. From alpine meadows and narrow twisty roads to crazy still hill drops and learning to descend using the gears rather than the brakes (thanks Susan!), it was a truly spectacular drive. Even the two and a half our stop on a mountain road while a traffic accident was a pleasant stop despite the circumstances.
